Hanggang three, tapos three to eleven ng gabi
Seven to three, tapos three to eleven ng gabi=sixteen

Interpretation: The piece begins with the narrator experiencing America as comfort and relief compared with the difficult physical life he remembers in the Philippines. But the meaning of the title, “Sixteen,” changes everything: her sister works sixteen hours—from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., then 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. The apparent American “ginhawa” (comfort or better life) is therefore built on his sister’s exhaustion and sacrifice.

The ending is especially effective because the narrator initially interprets his sister’s appearance through the symbols of American prosperity—lighter skin and “eye shadow”—before realizing that the paleness and darkness around her eyes may actually come from overwork and lack of sleep. The poem contrasts the dream of America with the labor required to sustain that dream, using humor and innocent observations to reveal something much harsher underneath.
