Support Kusina ng Bayan, the Kitchen that Feeds More than Hunger

Chicago’s Filipinx/a/o community has faced plenty of hardships this year, from rising prices and lower wages to reduced access to healthcare and attacks on our immigrant communities. Amid these challenges, food has become one of the primary ways our community continues to stay connected, resilient, and rooted. Through these challenges, Chicago’s Filipino food landscape has grown into one of the city’s most vibrant and culturally rich culinary movements. From long-loved institutions to pop-up chefs reimagining classics to new employers that hire staff, Filipino cuisine in Chicago continues to thrive, and its growth reflects the strength and creativity of our people. Our kababayan persevere through hardship thanks to the power of community.

The contemporary scene is defined by a blend of traditional and modern takes on Filipino cuisine, with new businesses often located near existing ones. Many new establishments are part of a creative incubator culture, where chefs and entrepreneurs support one another. Whether it’s a kamayan-style feast, a modern take on adobo, a heart-healthy alternative to kare kare, a traditional return to ginataang, or simple halo-halo for children, Filipino food in Chicago is rooted in collaboration, mutual uplift, and deep cultural pride.

At the heart of this ecosystem is the Rizal Center, a gathering place that nurtures community in the most literal sense. Every week, the Center hosts at least one event that includes catered food, feeding more than 50 people at no cost. These meals aren’t just about eating, but also about connection, tradition, and ensuring that every community member — regardless of income — has a place at the table.

Now, the Rizal Center is ready to take a major step forward to feed even more with Kusina ng Bayan, a community kitchen designed to expand access to Filipino food, cultural education, and weekly shared meals. The kitchen will allow the Center to prepare food in-house, offer cooking classes, culinary workshops, operate as a food pantry, and strengthen partnerships with Chicago’s Filipino chefs and food entrepreneurs.

To make this vision a reality, we are launching a Giving Tuesday campaign and we need your support. Your contribution helps build a kitchen that will nourish families, sustain cultural traditions, and strengthen Chicago’s Filipino food community for years to come.

Please consider donating to the Kusina ng Bayan campaign today. With your help, we — as a united community — can offer so much more as a bastion of sustenance, empowerment, and hope to Filipinos and the city of Chicago as a whole.
