RIZAL CENTER PAMANA CHILDREN’S LIBRARY TURNS 1!

Hello, everyone!

Can you believe it’s been one whole year since the grand opening of the Pamana Children’s Library on December 9, 2023? The time has flown by, and we have been so blessed with the opportunity to do so many wonderful things through this initiative. Just to give a quick summary:

  • We welcomed families from across Chicago to Rizal Center for our opening ceremonies, joined by our very special guest Little Miss Ann Torralba!
  • We donated books to the Newberry Library here in Chicago and to University of Minnesota Libraries Children’s Literature Research Collections (CLRC).
  • We partnered directly with Filipino authors like Tor Alvarez Sagud to feature their works in our collection, allowing their books to reach a broader audience and preserving their unique cultural heritage for posterity.
  • With the leadership of dedicated volunteers like Carla Navoa, we started the monthly storytime series, a recurring opportunity to share Filipino language, literature, and food with Chicago children of all cultural backgrounds.
  • We partnered with the Consulate General of the Philippines for a storytime event focused on Filipino food at the Consulate’s downtown office.
  • We advised a Filipino friend living in Paris, France, on how to start a similar children’s library in her community, expanding awareness of Filipino culture in those locales.
  • Our work with Pamana inspired our dedicated team of volunteers to launch the Filipino School of Chicago, on which work is ongoing. Updates will be included in future editions of this newsletter!

We are beyond excited for what year two of the Pamana Children’s Library will hold! The storytime series will continue into 2025 and beyond. We have no doubt that our collection will continue to expand thanks to kind donations or books, and continue to available to Rizal Center guests. And Pamana will be closely involved in the development of resources and hosting events for Rizal Center and Filipino School of Chicago.

We are very thankful to all who have volunteered their time to help plan and execute our activities, donated books or money to purchase more books, or even left an encouraging comment or constructive criticism. We would be honored if you chose to support our mission in any of these ways.

We are entering a time when many make charitable donations, so if what we do at Pamana resonates with you, we hope you will seriously consider supporting our work!
