Help Us Build Kusina ng Bayan: The Community’s Kitchen

Chicago’s Filipinx/a/o community has faced significant challenges this year, from rising costs and economic uncertainty to reduced access to essential services and growing pressures on immigrant communities. This past summer, much of Rizal Center’s time, resources, and fundraising has focused on necessary improvements to make our building safer, more accessible, and better prepared to serve the community. Through the dedication of volunteers and supporters, we have made important progress repairing and restoring the Center and addressing critical building needs. With that foundation becoming stronger, we are now ready to direct more of our fundraising energy back towards bringing Kusina ng Bayan to life.

At Rizal Center, we believe that everyone has a place at the table. That is the vision behind Kusina ng Bayan, the Community’s Kitchen. By restoring and activating the kitchen, we can create a space as a game changer that nourishes both people and community: preparing shared meals, expanding food access, offering cooking classes and cultural workshops, supporting food pantry activities, and partnering with Filipino chefs and food entrepreneurs.

Over time, Kusina ng Bayan can become even more: a home for kamayan gatherings, culinary and hospitality workforce development, emerging food entrepreneurs, and collaborations among Chicago’s Filipino restaurants and culinary leaders. It can be a place where traditions are passed down, new ideas take root, and community is built around the table. Rooted in collaboration, creativity, and cultural pride, our chefs, restaurants, home cooks, entrepreneurs, and community members continue to preserve traditions while creating something new for the next generation.

Since last fall, volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to clean the kitchen space, while critical repairs have addressed plumbing and ceiling issues. We have also secured a commitment for donated tile for a new kitchen floor, which is another important step toward making the space safe, functional, and welcoming. Each improvement has been possible because community members have contributed their time, skills, resources, and belief in what this kitchen can become. Volunteers are working to assess and restore the kitchen, develop programming, and raise the resources needed to bring this vision to life.

But there is still much more to do! In the spirit of bayanihan, we call upon our kababayan for help. Your donation to Kusina ng Bayan is a continued investment in this game changer. It helps create a place where families can be nourished, cultural traditions can thrive, entrepreneurs and community members can find opportunity, and generations can continue to gather around Filipino food.

Help us finish what our community has started! Donate to Kusina ng Bayan today and help transform this kitchen into a lasting source of nourishment, connection, culture, and opportunity for Chicago for years to come!
