Memorial Day Sing-Along: Fostering Love, Joy, and Unity

Ester Hana leads the community singing of the song “Magellan” to honor Yoyoy Villame’s contribution to the Visayan musical gems.

Our Memorial Day Sing-Along was not just a celebration of music; it was a testament to the power of community and the impact of shared experiences. Through our Asian Giving Circle’s funded Lots of Love program, we brought people together to combat loneliness and isolation, creating an atmosphere of joy, connection, and belonging—a true “home away from home.”

The event was a beautiful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together. With the support of our kababayans and the Bayanihan spirit, we transformed an ordinary day into an extraordinary celebration of culture, music, and unity.

The performances were nothing short of inspiring. From timeless sing-alongs to a heartfelt tribute to Filipino music, each moment was filled with warmth and emotion. Attendees were treated to a live piano performance by the talented Ester Hana, whose artistry as the Maestra of the Keys captivated everyone. Vocalist Jojo Villaruel delivered stunning renditions of beloved classics, including “Close to You,” “A Whole New World,” and “I Will Survive,” while a tribute to Filipino music with the song “Sampaguita” honored our shared heritage.

The event was also marked by significant moments that brought the community closer. We honored the memory of Willi Buhay, a cherished member of our community, and introduced Dr. Cleofe Guangko Casambre’s permanently loaned vintage Yamaha grand piano—a beautiful addition to our space and a symbol of unity and creativity. We also took the opportunity to announce the exciting launch of the Sinag Chicago Art Mural Project, which aims to further celebrate and preserve our cultural identity.

Beyond the music and performances, the sing-along was a platform for building lasting connections. New volunteers joined our growing Rizal Center family, and attendees learned about health initiatives and programs through CMAA and Rizal Center’s HOPE Campaign. We also extended an invitation to CIRCA Pintig’s upcoming theater performance of “Every Brilliant Thing,” further enriching the cultural fabric of our community.

The event’s success was evident in the smiles, laughter, and heartfelt reflections shared by attendees. Over 80 songs were prepared for the day, showcasing the talents and participation of multiple generations. Performances of classics like “Dancing Queen” and “What a Wonderful World” brought people together in a celebration of shared memories and cultural heritage.

One attendee remarked, “It was so beautiful singing together!” Another shared, “We’re creating something special that connects our community.” These words capture the essence of what the Memorial Day Sing-Along was all about—building a stronger, more connected community through the power of music and shared experiences.
